A Note from a Dr. Aronovitz Patient

hair transplant letter.jpg

As I was nearing 35 years old, I started to notice the front of my hair thinning, but one day, I decided to do something about it.

I’ve always cut my hair on a number 6 clipper and short on the sides, and although my hair was receding slightly, it wasn’t enough to bother me. As the years went on, the top became more and more thin. I couldn’t use any product without my scalp showing, and whenever I would see a picture of myself, all I could see was that I was balding. I’ve never been a vain person, but I just couldn’t handle the thought of losing my hair before turning 40. Some people can “do bald” well, but I really don’t think I am one of those people.

After deciding that I was going to do something about my hair loss, I started doing research. I looked on Google for hair replacement in Michigan, hair transplant in Michigan, hair replacement in Detroit and hair transplant in Detroit. That was when I stumbled across

I looked through the before and after pictures, and read everything on the website. I found to be a very informative and easy-to-navigate website. I also did a lot of background research on Dr. Aronovitz, and found that he is a very respected member of the medical community. If I was going to do this procedure, it had to be with the absolute best hair replacement hair transplant doctor in the Detroit Michigan area. After exploring other large corporate options and asking a lot of questions, I decided to schedule a free consultation with Dr. Aronovitz.

About 5 minutes into my consultation with Dr. Aronovitz, I knew that he was the right doctor for me. He was very humble, and made me feel comfortable and welcome. He explained all elements of the procedure, and answered every question I had. By the end of the meeting, we had booked a date.

When I came home and had a conversation with my wife, she was a bit skeptical. She was familiar with the really bad hair replacement transplants that looked like doll hair. I explained that the procedure has come a long way, and that Dr. Aronovitz was one of the absolute best in the industry.

When I went in the morning of the procedure, I met the staff and was given medication to help me relax. Next, they injected a local anesthetic to my scalp. The doctor was there the entire time, and didn’t hand over the procedure to his staff like I had heard some of the corporate chains do. I put in some headphones, and took a nice relaxing nap. There was literally no pain. And I know that results vary from patient to patient, but in my case, I felt no pain whatsoever.

When I got home after the procedure, all of my wife’s concerns vanished. I had some minor, nearly invisible scabs on my scalp, and you could even see the incision in the back of my head. Over the following few days, I took some ibuprofen for swelling, and went on about my life. I didn’t even have to wear a hat.

After only 6 months, my hair looks like it did in my 20’s. It’s thick, it’s full, and I realized that this was one of the absolute best decisions I had ever made in my life. Out the door, I believe the procedure was under $10,000, which was based on my number of hair graphs, which is small price to pay to never worry about going bald ever again.

Dr. Aronovitz is an amazing doctor, and even if you don’t live in Detroit or Michigan, you should call and book an appointment right away. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.

The Top Five Benefits of a Hair Transplant

Hair Dr. in Detroit

*Results may vary from person to person

For this month’s blog we sat down with Dr. Aronovitz to discuss what he thinks is the top five benefits of hair transplants.

1. To increase confidence and self esteem.

Hair loss isn’t just a physical suffering. It can greatly affect self-esteem, which impacts many different areas of life, including how attractive you feel, your confidence during job interviews, and sexuality. A hair transplant procedure can be a great way to gain confidence back.

2. This is hair that eliminates baldness.

Hair transplantation is widely considered to be the most effective option for restoring hair because it’s a relatively simple procedure, and it achieves a natural look. During a hair transplant procedure, Dr. Aronovitz moves healthy hair follicles from one location and relocates them to the area of the head that’s thin or bald. Since the transplanted hairs are already resistant to the DHT hormone that causes hair loss, they will not thin or fall out in the future.

3. Better aesthetics and styling capabilities.

Most guys will cut their hair short because they do not have enough hair to cover and style well. A hair transplant will give you more options for styling your hair the way that you want.

4. A hair transplant is a “natural” process.

A hair transplant uses YOUR hair. No chemicals, weaves or cover up products are used. Unlike hairpieces which may not exactly match your hair color and type, hair transplantation looks completely natural because it is your own hair—just moved to a new spot.

5. A hair transplant is more cost effective.

All other hair replacement processes like weaves, wigs, spray ons, etc. need constant maintenance on a regular basis and the costs will continue to build and do not end.

“What inspires me is the end result and seeing how a hair transplant changes the way people feel about themselves, it is very rewarding.”  Dr. James Aronovitz has been performing hair transplants for thirteen of the twenty years he has been a practicing doctor and has earned a reputation as one of the top experts in the field.  After completing his undergraduate studies at The University of Michigan, Dr. Aronovitz attended the Medical School at Michigan State University.  Dr. Aronovitz explains, “I am a Michigan boy from the start; I decided to stay local because I knew I would end up here – my family is here also – so I knew I was staying here.”  He trained locally, including an ENT residency in Pontiac.  He also spent time at the DMC, Wayne, and University of Michigan hospitals.  He is also a staff doctor at St. John’s Hospital.

While Dr. Aronovitz was working a double residency as an Ear Nose and Throat specialist and Facial Plastic Surgeon, he started started to explore other avenues and decided that hair transplants would be a great fit.  “I love it.  It’s artistic – it’s not just plugging away hairs, it’s making it so it comes out right and flows with the other hair perfectly.”  The doctor goes on to explain that having a background in plastic surgery gives him an advantage to other doctors who may be performing hair transplants.  “A lot of doctors jump into things that are cosmetic because they think it’s easy… and that is problematic to me.  There are guys out there doing things they shouldn’t do; I think people should really do their homework when they are looking for people to do the procedure.  Make sure you know the doctor’s background.  As a plastic surgeon, I have the confidence to do it.”

So what is a hair transplant?  It is a surgical technique that involves moving individual hair follicles from one part of the body to the bald area.  The transplant procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes about six hours to complete.  There are several techniques available for harvesting the hair follicles, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.  After two to three months, new hair will begin to grow from the moved follicles.  The patient’s hair will grow normally and continue to thicken over the next six to nine months.  This procedure is primarily used in the treatment of male pattern baldness, but women can also benefit from the operation.

Dr. Aronovitz had two offices in which he performed the procedure but recently decided to consolidate everything into his Warren, Michigan office.  “The decision was more personal than anything; I decided I wanted to be able to focus more on patient care and less on driving back and forth to appointments.”  Now the doctor is available five days a week in his new office and has more time to spend with his family.  His new office has a brand new, state-of-the-art operating room featuring the most up to date technology.  He splits his time performing hair and facial plastic surgery and ear, nose and throat procedures.  “I like the differences every day – it mixes it up – just doing one thing a day can burn you out and I don’t want that to happen.”  To stay current, Dr. Aronovitz also maintains affiliations with many important medical societies, including The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) and The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS).

“When someone comes in for a free consult, they have so many preconceived notions.  I want patients to feel comfortable with the procedure – I try my best to make them feel at ease.”  The doctor goes on to explain some of the red flags you may want to watch for when deciding whether to go forward with the procedure.  “If you go in for the procedure and do not meet the doctor, it’s a huge red flag.  People come into my office all the time and say, ‘what are you doing here?  I never even met with the doctor last time – I met with some type of marketing guy.’ The patient refers to how they didn’t even see the doctor until the day of the procedure. This can be due to marketing techniques used by big conglomerate companies; doctors are assigned to patients and may come from out of state to perform the surgery. To me it can show a lack of  the dedication to the patient. If you come into an office and the physician cannot answer your questions, that is a huge red flag.  He should be able to answer every question in that field.”

Dr. James Aronovitz

“Be aware of bargain prices or offers – I understand that people are looking to save money and it is an expensive procedure.  I usually tell people after my free consultation to go talk to other doctors and they will find that my pricing is not even an issue.  My office has four  technicians working with me – it is a very detailed long procedure – my prices ensure everything I need to do the job the right way.  If people are out there price checking,  I feel I am not too expensive or too cheap; I am somewhere in between.  After the free consultation the patient leaves my office with everything they need to make a decision and I encourage patients to take their time with the decision.  I think they leave knowing I will be there for them when they need me.”
